London - Japanese car maker Nissan said on Thursday it was to add 800 staff and begin a third production shift at its plant in Sunderland, northeast England, in response to demand for its Qashqai.
"Currently on two shifts, we can produce 200 000 Qashqais per year. However, the car is proving so popular we now need to significantly increase our volume," Nissan Europe's Trevor Mann said in a statement.
Nissan said 400 of the 800 jobs would be permanent and the rest temporary. "In addition, all of the Sunderland plant's current temporary manufacturing staff will be offered permanent positions," it said.
