In a world of information overload and pseudo-engineering experts at each digital turn, the RS6 was perhaps one of the most prejudged cars of all time.

Before it had even turned a wheel on local asphalt, RS6 was castigated as being too portly, too traction-biased (allegedly robbing it of class leading standing start accelerative prowess and dynamic verve) as well as subtle to the point of looking dowdy. The last point was particularly vexing, considering the entire raison d'être of a German super saloon is stealth…

After spending a week in the company of a sinister-looking, black RS6, I think it’s only fair to do some myth debunking – correlating facts and figures, and correcting the general fiction surrounding the RS6.

Menacing in the metal?

Considering the slew of criticism directed against the RS6’s lack of visual drama, one wonders how many people actually remember what class of car this RS6 is.

The RS6 is a German super saloon - or Q-car - and owes its existence (as loathe as Ingolstadt may be to admit this) to the E28 M5 of the mid 1980s – itself a car virtually indistinguishable from other E28 5 Series models.

Super saloons of this ilk are supposed to look as surreptitious as possible, delivering stunning levels of performance with very little ornate aesthetic clues.

Judged against such criteria – and even as an overall aesthetic exercise – the RS6 is an ominous, broodingly attractive thing.

The latest A6 facelift is one of the best in the memory of recent product updates, with the range’s bulbous rear properly restyled by those new light clusters.

LEDs are starting to become a bit passé, yet Audi's restyling of the A6 rear with a liberal application of light emitting diodes is superbly executed. This is coincidently the view 99% of other road users will mostly see of the RS6...for a moment, before it disappears into the distance

In RS6 guise, the oversized Audi grille is neatly framed by a lower lip spoiler and ornately cut-out bumper air-intakes, and around the rump, the lower fascia embedded diffuser is embellished by two oversized exhausts. Subtly flared wheel arches house gorgeous, 20-inch alloy wheels featuring a five-spoke design that splits into three individual blades each.

Overall the styling renders a neatly proportioned, yet unnervingly intimidating looking car - without having to revert to a look of garish, aftermarket excess.

For all the doubters, I spent ten minutes outside the decidedly nondescript Pringle Bay Café showing the car to a babbling R32 owner, who had the glazed-over look of a man who had just had his Damascus road experience. His pregnant wife in the R32’s passenger seat, with groceries on lap, looked less impressed though…

The RS6’s cabin is standard A6 fare, which means it looks better, and feels better built, than anything else in class. Considering the RS6 retails for silly money (R1 094 500), you’d expect comprehensive specification and this car does come well kitted.

Superb sport seats, electronic everything (controlled by Audi’s user-friendly second generation MMI system) and an operatic quality Bose surround sound system are all standard.

In fact, the only things you can really option are an iPod music interface connector (R2 450 but there is a standard iPod jack), TV reception (R6 360), Audi’s advanced parking system (R5 300) and adaptive cruise control (R18 090).

Thanks to RS6 riding on the A6 platform, interior space is capacious, with the lengthy wheelbase ushering in plenty of legroom for rear passengers.

RS6 boot space borders on the ridiculous at 546l, besting its primary rival, the M5, which sports only 500l of golf club-ferrying capacity – if such considerations are core to your purchasing rationale…

Ten cylinders, two turbos. Slow? No.

RS6 has all the makings of a formidable Q-car (subtle styling presence, sumptuous interior comfort, ludicrous engine configuration), yet in reality, does this package run true to its billing?

Despite boasting phenomenal power figures courtesy of its 5l, direct-injection, bi-turbo V10, the RS6 does have one inherent dynamic design handicap – it’s a properly heavy performance car.

It might not look fat, and Audi will tell you they’ve melted down miracle lightweight aluminium to make the RS6, but 1 985kg in dry trim is a lot of car to keep tidy at speed.

Our test car had just over 6 000km on the clock and the brakes were glazed, which considering the RS6’s combination of excess mass and alarming pace, is hardly surprising.

Though it is unlikely owners will ever subject their cars to a driving regime as severe as motoring journalists do, the standard brakes, despite being dimensionally impressive (390mm front/356mm rear) are not the car’s dynamic strength.

Those optional R115 400 ceramic brakes (420mm/356mm) are an embarrassing expense to explain to the wife, but pretty much a necessity.

Dry sump lubrication enables Audi to mount it as low as possible, yet the V10's mass is still mostly ahead of the front axle line. Transmission and front differential are not repositioned like the latest A4/A5 quattros, subsequently right hand drive RS6s retain a proper left footrest - bonus.

In the world of engine design, individual cylinders 500cm3 in capacity are the golden mean with regards to smoothness, piston speed and packaging. Just think 3l six-cylinder, 4l eight-cylinder and six-litre 12-cylinder configuration. RS6’s 5l V10 slots right in with this purity of design, in contrast to the 5.2l V10s powering its siblings S6 and S8…

The V10 engine peculiarly features a torque – instead of revolution – biased long-stroke architecture, which explains the abundant rotational force available at low engine speeds.

From only 1 500r/min, an entirely wholesome (or should it read wholesomely insane?) 650Nm is available right through to 6 250r/min. Combine this torque figure with a power peak of 426kW at 6 700r/min and you have severe thrust, the two-tonne rolling mass notwithstanding.

Frantic teenage car fanatics will be impressed by the four and a half second 0-100km/h standing sprint time, yet it’s in the fullness of time and distance the RS6 numbers really start to tally. Limited to 250km/h it may be, yet covering 1 000m from a standing start in a whisper under 23 seconds certifies it as a significantly rapid car.

At Reef altitude M5 owners, even in turbocharger unfriendly midday summer temperatures, are advised to pick their RS6 victims with extreme caution, preferably when the Audi drivers are on the phone…

Overtaking acceleration is simply stupefying. With the abundance of bi-turbo rotational force at lower engine speeds (something missing from both M5 and S6), RS6 enables one to stun passengers with normally suicidal seven-cars-at-a-time passing manoeuvres - executed within a nearly inconceivable margin of safety.

The RS6's six-speed tiptronic gearbox might appear out of its depth technologically considering a slew of new dual clutch offerings and M5’s obstinate, track certified, SMG gearbox, but in reality it’s a peach of a transmission.

Left to its own devices, smoothness around town shames BMW’s SMG and when it’s dynamically engaged, the software intuitively realigns shift patterns (even throttle blipping downshifts) to the driver’s intent.

When the mood takes you – and it will often enough – you can engage the RS6’s very liberal ESP Sport function, task shifting with the steering wheel paddles and experience the V10’s awesome pace.

In ESP sport mode, the all-wheel drive system’s self-locking centre differential showcases its abilities, distributing torque commensurate to traction and lateral forces, allowing one to revel in RS6’s very tidy body control.

Optional dynamic ride control is nearly obligatory for the enthusiastic RS6 owner, ride quality varies from acceptable on 'comfort', to punishingly focused on 'sport'. The mechanically cross-linked hydraulic nature of the system ensures phenomenal body control and preditable feel.

Through sweeping, high speed corners, with the optional DRC dynamic ride control (R14 200) electronic damping set to Sport, RS6 is massively reassuring. If you pick your lines neatly, factor in the heightened pace at which the RS6 is capable of travelling, and keep steering inputs dexterous, RS6 is deftly accomplished - despite its weight.

Yes, the steering is a little numb, yet when you’re tasking an electronic power steering system to park a 2 ton car with fingertip ease and keep it steady cornering at 250km/h, it’s an inevitable compromise.

And yes, quattro all-wheel drive means very little lurid power sliding. RS6 will twitch its tail on a track with the requisite provocation and ESP completely disengaged though, with the quattro system apportioning 85% of the power to the rear wheels - allegedly...

On South African roads though, with all manner of surface imperfections and spilt construction sand surprises awaiting you mid-corner, all-wheel drive is the best way to distribute 426kW to the road.

Clever all-wheel drive system keeps the 2t mass in check and resolves the best dynamic blend from the RS6. Sand encrusted lower left fascia section indicative of RS6's limited off-road ability too - oops...

Design

Audi has perhaps gone overboard with its LED design directive, yet with the RS6’s substantial wheels and exhausts, the smattering of LEDs do not look out of place. Better looking car than the M5 in our book - subtle yet sinister, the way a super saloon should be.

Interior

Spacious, beautifully built – Audi does it better than anybody else. Seats could do with more aggressive side-bolstering for 10/10ths track day driving. M5’s heads-up display remains the coolest interior gadget in its class, though.

Driving

Theoretically, the mass and all-wheel drive layout should anaesthetise RS6 dynamically. Brakes suffer, yet handling is unwittingly sharp and body control ace. Perhaps the overly insulated exhaust note (booming exhaust back pressure red-line changes notwithstanding) is the only detraction from the dynamic driving experience. In mitigation BMW's V10 only sounds better at excruciatingly high engine speeds and the AMG V8s remain the standout engines in class for acoustic entertainment.

ESP sportmode is the perfect partner of an early morning run up your favorite mountain pass...

Verdict

Perhaps in a decade we’ll look back at the RS6, M5 and E 63 AMG as the zenith of German autobahn storming saloons, the bell-curve turning point of a nonsensical power race, which was eventually stymied by emission controls.

If you can drive like Giniel de Villiers, own a racetrack with plenty of run-off area and have a bother in law who owns a tyre fitment centre, BMW’s M5 is a very naughty, rewarding car, and ultimately a touch sharper than the RS6.

Around town though, there is no contest - RS6 is infinitely better as a daily driver.

Therefore, as an all-round, towering super saloon, the RS6 deserves to be considered an achievement in its own right.

Hats off to engineers, what a noble profession. In the confined measurements of a motorcar there is little more that can be bettered and still allow humans to occupy comfortably to enjoy the ride. Once inside and the door shut, even your shoe size increases by two numbers!

The real world don't have sunny weather all the time and don't have smooth surfaces everywhere. Lots of torque and traction at all revs and all weather conditions is what I want, because that's more usable in the real world. BMWs are generally overrated... although I could be persuaded by a boosted 135i (if it had x-drive 4wd system) or the new 4.4 V8 turbo in new X5M, X6M. I live in a very mountainous SE-Asian country with very slippery road surfaces and hairpin bends. A RWD car with too little low RPM grunt won't go anywhere quickly here. Therefore I will take the Audi RS6 over an M5, because the RS6 will be quick almost everwhere, the BMW will be quick almost nowhere!!!

I reaaly do agree, all the big car brands are really nice! No one is gonna demolish another brand it just depends on taste when it comes to the M5, RS6, etc. 20 KW isn't gonna make you any happier than a car that is really the best looking car in your opinion! please grow up everyone

To Anon @26/5@4.54. Well that's cool dude. Park your 380kw motor in the RS6 and pitch it against the M5/6. The Audi's 4x4 drive will rob it of the extra 380 -352 = 28kw in NO TIME and the Audi will get its ass kicked har har har.............

To anon user 4:54pm. The V10 thats in the R8 V10 is actually the gallardo's new 5.2L V10, which is technically still an audi engine because audi owns lambo. They tried putting the 5L twin turbo V10 from the rs6 in the R8 V10 but because it is a mid-engined car, it didnt have sufficient cooling and had a problem with catching fire and overheating quite a bit. But you're right about audi is best!!

Anon @ 6:51, you are correct, the dual climate control, in fact most of the switches dials are from an A8, go have a look, the casting on the V10 block has four rings on it, Audi rings, every review of the Gallardo has mentioned the build quality, switchgear quality and feel, the first lambos that were a real pleasure to own were built by Audi, the RS4 has Gallardo front discs and calipers, these massive drilled and cross ventilated discs are designed for lambo, yet are found in the RS4, and a variation of the brute V10 in the S6 and S8 has been tuned to a "civilised 336Kw" and the turbo 426Kw version in the new RS6, all these figures are conservative, look for MTM RS6 on the net, they offer a 701Hp RS6, thats 522kw and sub 3.9 sec 0-100, top speed 200Mph or 322 kmh, yet it is totally civilised. to a previous user claiming the RS6 engine was stolen from the Lambo...catch a wake up dude, Audi owns Lambo, designed the Gallardo from top to bottom including that great sounding V10. You have obviously never been in a Gallardo, well check it out...even every button on the dash is Audi! The 1st Lambo that doesn't fall apart or rattle like an old Opel Kadett was made by Audi. Check your facts before you comment!

To Poacher: Take the turbos off, you say? It's been done already. 5l V10 R8 with 380+ kw and 8,800 rpm. NA or turbo, Audi is best!

5/26/2009 4:41 PM
Just to clear up a myth among the uneducated wanna-be car enthusiasts, the 5L V10 Twin-Turbo in the RS6 is Audi's own built engine. It is NOT borrowed from lamborghini (which Audi owns by the way). And to those who think Audi is incapable of building such an engine just look at where their engine technology has gotten them in Le Mans and that was from a diesel!!! And those of you who talk about brabus built Mercs that would beat the RS6 should have thought first before you opened your big mouths. Brabus is a tuning company which takes Mercs and tunes them to become as fast as humanly possible with no consideration towards the cost. They are an external company. Audi has developed this engine themselves and it is faster than any stock car of the same category, it is faster, even, than a few super cars. Another point is that this car cost R1.1 mill. thats R300 000 cheaper than an R8!!! Plus it's faster than the R8 AND it has the luxury and functionality of a saloon. To anonymous(26/05 - 12:24): "this has got to be the best engine ever made." That is a quote from Jeremy Clarkson who was talking about Audi's 4.2L V8. Enough said. To Francois: Please man. You sound like you from Cape Town and drive "a Corsa wif free flow exhaust and cone filter". I would love to see a SLK32 AMG that can get to 100km/h in 4.5sec. What are you smoking??? That's a 3.2L V6. Please explain how you can get it to do 4.5sec without taking it to some backyard tuner?

R1.1million for an Audi is ludicrous especially since the engine is stolen from the Gallardo! Where in this world can VW/Audi ever build an engine like that! When they compete in formula one or build engines themselves that are as legendary as those in the Pigani, Mclaren F1 and Brabus then they can earn some credibility! Heck any Brabus or Renntech Mercedes would ingest this Audi and leave biodegradable chips of it on teh tarmac. Even Koeniggsegg rebuilt the Audi 4.2Lt V8 they used in the first prototypes because it was weak! Nice try Ingolstad, but no cigar!

The debate surrounding the RS4/M3 is of little value here as these cars are appreciably lighter than the M5/RS6 and aimed at a driver who is more at ease with their frantic nature. I must say I am impressed with the RS6, though it was going to be just a warmed over S6 and it seems to actually cope very well mass notwithstanding. Interesting to see how technologically advanced the M5 has become too, and the overkill its SMG gearbox (though brilliant at 11/10ths) is, wonder what the next one will have. If you are going to be doing much town driving (and you will as a four door supesaloon is hardly a weekend toy only) the RS6's effortless low range urge and autobox make more sense. Splendid cars both..

@Anon. 9:24am, the first Car mag. issue I'm talking about is the comparison of RS4 and E92 M3 Coupe where almost all editors rated RS4 better than E92 M3. The second issue I'm talking about was the comparison of RS4 and E92 M3 sedan (4 door) where they rated M3 better than RS4. So I dont know where you got this two year interval you talking about bcos the new M3 arrived in SA late 2007 and the tests were done in 2008. check your facts b4 writing. And concerning Top gear I dont even want to waste my time checking wikipedia, I saw it myself on TV, download Season 10 Episode 9 of Top Gear and see yourself M3 beating RS4 and C63 around the track and drag racing. And coming to this car on discussion, yes M3 was quicker than RS4 around Kyalami. RS6 is just too heavy.

Auto motor und sport also preferred the RS4, so all your phantom facts are debunked like the fairy tales they are, and daffy, stop being a stubborn brat and accept the fact, RS4 still destroys new m3, RS6 still detroys m5, and will surely do the same to the new one, but wait for it, the new B8 RS4 is rumored to have the same supercharged 3.0 v6 as the current B8 S4, but tuned to RS4 guise, now imagine how the bmw boys will protest when that is released, all the excuses etc will not save you, you will lose by a significant margin yet again, no matter what bmw you drive.

Hey JACKEY!!!!! Have you seen the results of the 24 hours at Nurburgring over the weekend? Oops, Audi R8 LMS GT3 second overall and first in class at its first attempt. Two of them in the top five and all four finished the race. Plenty M3’s and M3 GT3’s, even the special BMW 6 series that was supposed to blow the R8’s into the weeds, didn’t place in the top fifteen. There was only one BMW in the top 15 and that was a modified Z4M Coupe(10th). Even a new Scirocco(15th) beat all the M3’s entered. So much for the prowess of your glory brand, JACKEY. Now don’t cry, Jackey. Maybe everyone looks at you in your BMW and feels sorry for you, or maybe they see you as a loser now, who knows?. BMW just can’t win anything anymore, except maybe engine of the year awards. Funny how those engines don’t produce any race winning results for BMW any longer, in any form of motor racing.

In fact Car mag is the only magazine I know that "once" declared RS4 better than M3. Why argue over a CAR!? Its personal preference! Are you all that insecure about your choices in life that you feel this strong a need to impose them on everyone else? It irritates me that I scroll down the page to read constructive thoughts regarding this new machine and I end up spending 90% of my time wading through personal vendettas! ... not to mention those that are simply trying to flaunt their cars/wealth in these threads. Do you really think anyone cares what car you drive or what you can or cant afford? Do you realize how poorly that comes across? If you've made so much money in your life why are you still trying so hard to impress people? If you had any class you'd be downplaying your afforded luxuries, especially given in the financial crisis the world currently find itself in. No? I wont be wasting my time trying to find something constructive in this comments anymore - its less of an discussion board than it is a blatant reflection of how shallow modern society has become

Awesome bit of machinery. I would buy one if I could afford it. All modern "Q cars" from any manufacturer these days are pretty much equal when it comes to performance and driving dynamics. The age old "Audi vs BMW vs Merc vs whoever else" arguments are getting stale already. It is PERSONAL PREFERENCE on what car you drive.

Hey Guys...chill. You guys sound so aggressive comparing Bmw, Audi and Merc..almost like you will lose something very dear and personal to yourself if your chaice of vehicle had to be upstaged, either in writing or on tar. The most amazing thing is that our roads are graced with the most amazing vehicles ever created. Just one pity that we cannot see more true exotics like Bugatti et al. Please keep up the ranting and raving...it is very entertaining to see how the vehicle comparisons chase up the levels of testosterone and aggression! Well done guys!

Personally I think super Saloons are pointless and over powered but nonetheless there is a market so I will leave it at that. But if I had to choose an Executive Super Saloon I would go Jaguar XFR. Its cheaper than the tuetonic 3 but has similar performance stats and its more exclusive. But thats just my choice. Either way if you are into excecutive super saloons then I find all tuetonic super saloons as awsome. But for over 1m..I would take by a 330D and a 370Z.

I own a 2004 RS6. Drove the new one two weeks ago. Apart from the modern feel and gadgetry of the 2009 version, there was not too much difference in the performance. I have always driven fast Audi's and the new one is outstanding. Like the older version the new one is an icon.

HAHAHa. Anon 11:55 . To keep it in perspective . A superfast car like this audi can maybe go from 0-100 in 4.5 seconds.( Keeping in mind you lose 5 % power in JHB because of altitude. A decent superbike can go from 0-100 in 2.5-2.9 Seconds if you know what you are doing. So you do the math . 1 second in a drag race is a huge. I own a 1000cc v-twin and believe me not even top cars like Porsche or ferrari have a change . Maybe after 260 or so but from 0-200 ....Dream On.

well ALFAholic, if you're quoting clarkson then make sure you do it right... you would have seen lately that he's changed his opinion and believes that all audi drivers have taken over the c**k role. that being said, even with 600kw, this car doesnt feel as exciting as a Noble M400 with 330kw,and as for the author saying its good around town and traffic, why not drive a bog standard A6 then if you're lookin for smooth shifts.
Hahaha

A fantastic article, very well written. The concept of a Super Stealth Saloon is generally missed by most "Robot Dicers". An enormous amount of satisfaction is achieved when Chuckles and his over-the-top hatchback with its massive add-on spoiler spoils for a drag from the lights and you leave him standing in a cloud of his own burnt out clutch and gearbox. Here in the UK and Europe, a lot of super saloon owners de-badge their cars (whether they be BMW, Audi, et al) so that, unless you know what to look for, you wouldn't know the difference between it and a bog-standard repmobile. And if you do know what to look for... well, you wouldn't be stupid enough to try and take them on in the first place!

Jackey, You buy a BMW because you think it gives you some kind of elevated standing in society. You look past all value and logic and choose BMW because you think it means people will respect you more. One can see by your arrogance that you think you are superior to most because you are Jackey and drive a BMW. You get so annoyed on this website because people do not acknowledge your superior status. I have some advice for you; a car will never substitute or allow you to obtain respect or class. Your comments here are actually hypocritical, because a person with class would never make such comments. So to let you know, you are not fooling everyone, and just because Francious see's the audi as a classy looking car does not mean he has no class. Any person, low or high class can distinguish that BMW, AUDI, Mercedes are all classy cars. It takes a very small person not to acknowledge this, because they drive one of them. Maybe try finding the real thing instead of replacing it materialistically, and then you will understand. Good luck!

U R right Chris and quoting from the mag "The first run was mesmerising – 4.3 seconds 0-100, a 12.4 second quarter-mile at 189km/h and wait for it – a 25.1 second standing kilometre at 246km/h! But then we immediately ran it again through the 0-100 and it returned a 4.6 second 0-100, and again at 4.9 seconds and the fourth time with the fan now running, it was well back north of five seconds. That afternoon in 30-degree temperatures and after a short drive it was back to where we started – mid-five second 0-100s – and only if we line-locked it. Incidentally, the car would only get into the fours using that method in ideal conditions and into the fives in the heat of the day. If it were a manual we’d be able to get the revs up to get it off the line, so we’ll give it that best run, but remember, like the Lexus hybrid’s hot lap last year, the RS 6 had to be specially treated to achieve its quickest run… The point however, is that the M5 and the CLS 63 will run in a band of 0.2 second figures whatever the conditions on the day or what was going on under the bonnet and unless you just drove your RS 6 out of your garage in the morning, it’s likely that the oke in the M5 or the AMG 63 is going to bliksem you off the line…"

Silver Surver is the owner of a chipped 335i in CT. I would think he would understand why boost always beats NA. Saying that the M5 is better than the RS6 cuz its NA is stupid....you follow different paradigms when building a high performance NA car as you would a High performance turbo car...and for thos quoting lap times at kyalami...remember one important fact... when tyres get hot and grip starts to go then AWD is absolute king...thats why 1 lap of kyalami is hardly anything uselful to compare with... Heat soak is fixable with the addition of an intercooler sprayer and/or water injection...both relatively simple and cheap btw...

It laps Kyalami in the same time as the N/A M5 that only makes only 310kW's up here on the reef while the RS6 makes 116kW's MORE at 426kW up here on the reef." So Chris what you are saying is that is suffers epic heat soak but still makes a full 426kW at the Reef, clever chappy, BSC Mec engineering degree surely. And if it laps at the same pace as the M5, it's doing its job running with the best in class, so what's the issue? "As stated in the world motoring press, as of about 3 weeks ago only 850 RS6's had been ordered WORLDWIDE! " I have no idea where you get that figure or report from, I've tried searching for it, should be good for residuals though.

Forget about the F10 M6, it will slay the RS6. 2000 kg's for the RS6 as opposed to 1710 kg's for the M6 negates any horsepower advantage the RS6 has." Well, the article expressly mentioned Reef users, so the author is factoring in the altitude argument. M6 is lighter, true, but not really part of the supersaloon argument now is it?

"@Andrew. If you want people carrier buy a Verso. Cayman R650K + Verso R220K and still 300K in the bank." - I hear your argument about the fantasy utility purchase, but so few people actually do such a double purchase even if they have the funds. Same rationale as underpins the station wagon and old solid-axle bakkie for R60 000 for off roading, everyone just buys a high spec SUV instead.
Mikej
5/22/2009 10:44 AM
I think the M5 is still the purer super saloon, especially considering the RS6's engine placement so far forward and all, yet the RS6 appears to quite accomplished, and the M5's SMG is not an awfully pleasing transmission to peddle around in every day, especially when trying to park.

Silver Surfer what is the point of bringing the 911 into the comparison? A great car no doubt, but it hardly has the carrying capacity of the RS6, M5 or E 63 AMG, which are the cars under discussion here. And if you think any car above R400 000 is depreciation proof, well...

GREAT ARTICLE Lance. At least you praised the AUDI where praise is due and mentioned short comings. I think this car is brilliant. Also please note the BMW M5 now is also over a R1million rand and also has long options list. So in a sense its madness to go buy a new M5 now as you getting a 3 year old car when Audi makes much more sense for 40 thousand rand more only. Unless you wanna wait very till end 2010 for the next M5 but then you gonna starting getting the smaller engines introduced as a result of emissions. So if you a really want want a V10 brute in sheep skin clothing this is your last chance as it might be the last.
