Can you hear ‘glug glug’ without thinking of Sasol? Can you sing along to David Kramer’s ‘Volksie’ song?
Each year, car advertisements are usually the most awarded and watched in South Africa, and with the innovation and creativity we can be sure to have a few favourites that we still love!
We have listed five of our favourite classic South African car advertisements to refresh your memory:
1. Ford Bantam (1985)
We can forgive you if you thought that a Ford Bantam bakkie can transport anything, after this advert we are pretty convinced ourselves.
This advert saw two ornithologists taking a trip with their Mazda diesel bakkie, showing the resilience and strength of the vehicle.
3. VW T3 Vanagon Kombi MicroBus (1980s)
David Kramer did a range of adverts with VW. In the thirteen years that he worked with the brand, he become synonymous with the Kombi. Even now, the song is still fondly sung amongst South Africans.
4. Mercedes-Benz (1991)
This iconic advert is known because it claimed that a man whose car rode off the road on Chapman’s Peak, survived because he wore his seatbelt and was driving a Mercedes-Benz.
5. Toyota Camry (1994)
This advert tackles the luxury car niche in a unique way, depicting what your luxury car says about you, and how the Camry is different. It’s an evergreen advert, that would work today as well.
