Cape Town - The new Toyota Hilux reclaims its title as the best-selling bakkie in South Africa. According to the latest sales figures for the month of April, a total of 3221 units were sold, reports National Association of Automobile Manufacturers of South Africa (Naamsa).
We drove the new Toyota Hilux at its local launch earlier in 2016.
Total industry new vehicle sales declined 9.2%, year-on-year, with only 40 390 new vehicles sold across all segments, reports Naamsa.
Sales of new light commercial vehicles (LCV) were 12 192 units during April, reflecting a marginal decline of 18 units or a fall of 0.1% compared to the 12 210 LCVs sold during the corresponding month in 2015.
Top-sellers in SA
The Ford Ranger has been a consistent top seller for the past year even trumping the previous-generation Hilux on many occasions. It seems those days are over as the Hilux dominates the local market.
In April 2016, 2341 Ranger bakkies were sold (compared to 3004 units in March), followed by Isuzu KB with 1004 units (1042 in March).
