SA-bound bakkie: More details, pics of VW's Amarok V6

Cape Town - In April 2016, we published images and details of Volkwagen's facelifted Amarok.

The big news, of course, was the addition of a new 3.0-litre V6 turbodiesel model (which VW has not confirmed for SA).

However, Volkwagen South Africa has verified the facelifted model with the 2.0-litre TDI and BiTDI engines will arrive during the second half of 2017.

Dubbed as a premium bakkie

Now the automaker has revealed more details of the interior and the power outputs of the two V6 variants. The engine will be available in Europe in two versions; a 165kW/500Nm and a de-tuned 150kW version.

According to the automaker, the Amarok measures in at 5.25m in length and a width of 2.23m (side-mirrors included).

In Europe, the model is available with an 8-speed auto transmission (paddle-shifts are standard) and permanent '4MOTION' all-wheel drive. The 165kW version is capable of reaching 100km/h in 7.9 seconds onto a top speed of 193km/h.

According to VW, the new Amarok is equipped with BlueMotion technology as standard and also offers modern efficiency measures such as a stop/start system.

The premium 'Aventura' guise features 20" alloy wheels, an exclusive sports bar, bi-xenon headlights and loads of chrome.

Moving inside, the Amarok benefits from 14-way electrically adjustable seats smothered in nappa leather.

A more premium instrument cluster featuring a 3D-colour display and a multi-function steering-wheel. The Euro-spec models will feature a new in-car entertainment (ICE) system that can sync smartphone apps via the touchscreen with features such as App Connect and Guide and Inform.

The Amarok will use VW's ‘Park Pilot’ parking assistance system, aided by a rear view camera to make parking the vehicle less of a chore.

The international launch for the Amarok takes place in July/August 2016, more details will be revealed then.
