Landy Defender for 'Born Free'

2012-08-02 08:38

CEMENTING CONSERVATION TIES: Pictured at the Defender handover are Glen Vena and Catherine Gillson of Born Free Foundation, and Kevin Flynn, MD of Land Rover SA.

Land Rover SA’s commitment to wildlife conservation has been reinforced by the handing over of a new Defender 130 double cab to the 'Born Free' Foundation.

The foundation is a UK-based wildlife charity and one of Land Rover’s global conservation partners since 2002. South Africa’s only BFF facility is at the Shamwari game reserve near Port Elizabeth and has a sanctuary caring for rescued big cats and educational facilities.

DOING THEIR PART

Land Rover SA managing director Kevin Flynn recently handed over the 130 and said:  “By supporting the foundation at Shamwari we’re assisting this commendable wildlife charity not only to provide a safe haven for rescued big cats from around the world but also to educate people on the plight of our wild animals.”

Born Free co-ordinator Catherine Gillson said: “The vehicle sponsorship is critical to our programme as it is used for everything we do, including collecting carcasses from farmers in surrounding areas, feeding the cats, checking fenced camps and clearing dead vegetation.”
