The original Merc off-roader sees a significant upgrade for 2012 with state-of-the-art features to ensure it keeps up to speed with modern conveniences.

STUTTGART, Germany - The Mercedes-Benz G-Class is selling so well in Russia and China that the German automaker has decided to keep the luxury SUV in its model range 33 years after it was launched.

A face-lifted version went on sale in June 2012 with a range of new engines and an updated interior.

The line-up retails from R786 900 for the 300 CDI Professional and R1 919 500 for the G55 AMG.

Mercedes-Benz has revealed that G-Class sales have risen by 50% over the past three years thanks to strong demand from Russia and China.

The automaker said overall sales in Russia grew by 26% in April 2012 while the G-Class is thriving in China.

Top of the range is the G 65 AMG which is also the most powerful model in the Mercedes catalogue with a 456kW V12 turbocharged engine. The off-roader is claimed to consume 17 litres/100km.

The G-Class is still produced in the Austrian city of Graz where only 250 000 examples have left the assembly lines since production began.
