Hot on the heels of its CVT auto and all-wheel drive siblings, the latest edition to Nissan's funky crossover family has arrived in South Africa - the new diesel-powered Juke.

According to Nissan, over 8500 Jukes have found homes in South Africa since it launched locally in October 2011.

The Japanese automaker said: "With its audacious looks, crossover design and enhanced economy, the new Juke diesel is an all-encompassing ‘wear-your-heart-on-your-sleeve’ expression of individuality and personality."

The turbocharged 1.5 dCi produces 81kW at 4000rpm and 260Nm from 1500rpm. Fuel consumption is rated at 4.2 lires/100km, with emissions of 109g/km.

The 1.5 dCi engine, which requires 50ppm or low-sulphur diesel, is in its sixth iteration and features a reduction in combustion noise as well as stop/start technology.

The manual transmission has also been refined. The 1st and 2nd-gear ratios have been shortened to allow for sharper response at low speeds, while the remaining four have been lengthened to allow for better fuel economy.

Three drive modes are on offer via the driver control system – Normal, Eco and Sport. In Eco mode the torque is limited to 220Nm while Sport mode "sharpens up the driving experience, ramping up the excitement of the drive." Pedal sensitivity is also adjusted depending on the drive mode.

Nissan SA Juke product manager Nancy Reddy said: “The recent expansion of the Juke range means that South Africans who dare to be different have even more to choose from. The addition of the new diesel adds a whole new dimension to the Juke range, where absolute frugality meets unbridled driveability in a completely unique package.

"The new Juke diesel is exciting in every respect – whether that means achieving unbelievable fuel economy or enjoying the enormous amount of torque in a sporty drive."

Standard equipment includes 17" alloys, fog lights, keyless entry and a stop/start button, immobiliser, power side-mirrors and windows, rain-sensing wipers and privacy glass in the rear. Other features include a multi-function leather steering wheel, a multi-info trip computer, audio system with USB, iPod and Bluetooth integration.

The Juke diesel also has cruise control with a speed limiter, six cup or bottle holders, dual tone suede upholstery and a leather gear lever.

In teams of safety, the model has an anti-lock braking system with electronic brake force distribution and six airbags.
