Toyota's Hilux 2.5 D-4D raised-body Raider double-cab is the latest recipient of Toyota’s technologically advanced and more powerful variable-nozzle turbo diesel engine.
This new engine, in line with the current automotive downsizing trend and already used in the Toyota Fortuner 2.5, has more power and uses less fuel despite its modest size.
The performance stats, Toyota says, are impressive: power shoots up from 75kW to 106kW and torque rises substantially from 260 to 343Nm.

"A lot of the credit for this," Toyota says, "must go to the variable-nozzle turbo, a technological tour-de-force. The turbine blades are widely adjustable, allowing the blade angles to be optimised according to engine load, or close when exhaust gas pressure is still weak to force the exhaust gas to flow in a narrower area."
This, Toyota explains, increases the gas flow pressure that allows the turbo to work. At high rpm, the blades are fully open to avoid the kind of pressure that can damage a turbocharger.
"It’s also worth noting that the turbo is activated at very low rpm because the blades are then powered by an electric motor."
The new engine is available only with a five-speed manual transmission but all Raider models and the SRX Xtra Cab, in addition to the engine upgrade, now have power-folding external mirrors and manual headlight levelling.
The new raised-body Hilux Raider 2.5 D-4D double-cab costs R358 000 (inc VAT) and is delivered with a five-year or 90 000km service plan.
