Rexton W to bolster SsangYong

SsangYong continues to make strides back into South Africa and with them come the introduction of the latest Rexton range.

The facelifted Rexton was launched in South Korea in May 2012 although, unlike its successors launched in 2001 and 2006 respectively, it now has a “W” for “world class” or “work of art” to its nomenclature.

TURBODIESEL POWER

CEO of Mahindra SA, which distributes the brand, Ashok Thakur, said: “The addition of the Rexton W to the existing SsangYong line-up in South Africa, being the Korando C-segment SUV and the recreation-focused Actyon Sport double-cab, not only broadens our potential customer base but also contributes to dealer viability and overall brand awareness.”

The Rexton W is defined by SsangYong as "a true premium mid-sized 4x4 SUV” and is now available through the 22-dealer network at R349 995 for the five-seat model and R389 995 for the seven-seater. Each is powered by a 2.7-litre turbodiesel engine that generates 121kW at 4000rpm and 340Nm of torque at 1800rpm.

The Rexton W is suitable for all road and off-road conditions, driving the rear wheels in two-wheel mode, although it also has a low-range gearbox for when it is required. It also has a towing capacity, SsangYong said, up to 2.7 tons.

The standard model comes with a five-speed manual gearbox, the seven-seater with a five-speed auto sourced from Mercedes Benz.

SAFETY FIRST

Physical changes include upgrades to both the exterior and interior of the Rexton. New front and rear bumpers, a new grille, indicators integrated into the wing mirrors, new front fog lights and 18” alloy rims are some of the changes.

The cabin gets a multi-purpose steering wheel, audio system with MP3 capability and six speakers, plus standard Bluetooth for hands-free cellphone operation, along with climate control and rear pack assist.

The deluxe model adds leather seat trim and cruise control.

Safety features range from a high-tensile steel chassis frame and collapsible steering column to anti-lock brakes and air bags.

The Rexton W is offered in a choice of four exterior colours, white, silver and two shades of grey, and is covered by a three-year or 100,000km warranty with roadside assistance and a five-year or 90 000km service plan. Service intervals are at 15 000km.
