Cape Town - Volkswagen will no longer watch perennial rival Toyota take the glory and sales with its dominating SUV - the Fortuner.
According to motoring.com.au, the German automotive giant could create a new seven-seat SUV based on the new Amarok due in South Africa later in 2017.
In SA, the Fortuner has the monopoly of the market, with Ford's Everest a viable alternative. Sadly, VW does not have a competitor in this segment.
The Australian motoring site spoke to Carlos Santos, head of VW Australia's commercial vehicles, who said: "There is some very serious development happening at the moment for an SUV based on Amarok, which will be quite a large passenger vehicle."
In Australia, the SUV will use the 3.0-litre turbodiesel engine due to debut in the facelifted Amarok.
Asked to comment on the introduction of the SUV to South Africa, a VWSA representative told Wheels24 that "there is nothing planned as far as we know."
