Cape Town - "Fords...it's so hot out there, some of them are literally frying!" says Rob Green Motorsport  (RGMotorsport). The local tuner can can help the Ranger and Everest models keep cool despite the scorching weather...

The 3.2-litre five-cylinder turbodiesel is one of the top guns in the bakkie and SUV market, though overall performance can be improved. A diet of cold, dense air is what any engine requires to perform at its best but this is often in short supply, says RGMotorsport.

Loss of power at altitude

Many turbodiesel owners experience a performance loss and increased lag in very hot conditions (especially apparent at Reef altitude). High ambient temperatures mean the intake air is less dense and the standard intercooler can battle to cool it sufficiently.

Customer feedback and marketplace research by RGMotorsport indicates the Ford’s five-cylinder is particularly susceptible to this – hence the fix.

With an RGMotorsport “Supercool” intercooler upgrade a thicker, all-aluminium unit replaces the standard item and is fitted into the exact same location. The difference is that the imported, highly-efficient core and proudly South African upper and lower tanks do a far more efficient job of cooling the incoming air – but without causing a pressure drop.

The result is a large volume of cooled and dense air arriving at the inlet valves! How much more? Enough to show gains in the region of 7 - 8kW and 12 - 15Nm in in-house testing according to RGM.

The cost of an RGM Supercool upgrade is R8500 with a same-day turnaround time. and like all RGM conversions come with a minimum six month or 20 000 km warranty.
