SHANGHAI, China - Chinese automaker Chery is counting on ex-Porsche designer Hakan Saracoglu to improve its models.
Saracoglu (47), who has also worked at Ford, leads a team of 30 at Chery's Shanghai-based design centre to come up with new models for the automaker.
Chery's local offerings include the QQ and Tiggo but its new designer hopes to change the brand's image.
'LET'S SAY I'M NOT UNHAPPY'
Saracoglu said: "Chery is not just QQ, we're going to change that. The company is redefining itself. Chery is standing for value, for design and gaining customer confidence. That's where we want to go."
Saracoglu has worked on several models such as Ford's Focus and Mondeo and Porsche's 918 Spyder, Boxster and Cayman.
According to Sanford C. Bernstein & Co, salaries for foreign auto engineers in China are reportedly three times higher than those in the USA and Europe.
When asked how much he was offered to leave Porsche, Saracoglu said: "I cannot comment on that. Let's say I'm not unhappy."
