'Where can I buy a driver's licence?' - Mbalula warns it's not like buying ngathi ligwinya (vetkoek)

Johannesburg - If you're struggling to pass your driver's licence it's best to approach your local traffic department and not, as one twitter user did, attempt to find out how you can obtain one illegally.

Twitter user @SnaloMbombo  tweeted: "Anyone know where I can buy a driver's license? Please RT. Also DM if you don't want to reply. Y'all get people dates, I need a license."

Unfortunately she got more than she bargained for when her tweet caught the attention of Police Minister Fikile Mbalula.

'Everybody knows, bra' - Will this SA ad curb drunk driving?

Mbalula retweeted: "It's a criminal offence to buy a driver's licence (like a) ngathi ligwinya (vetkoek). It will get you, the traffic department and the driving school arrested."

Driver training at SA schools

Earlier in January, Wheels24 reported on the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) is implementing numerous road safety school projects from 2017 - 2018, one of which the rollout of driver simulators.

It's hoped that the driving simulators programme will give learner drivers the opportunity to develop and enhance their skills to become good and safe drivers.

Former Transport Minister, Dipuo Peters, said earlier in 2017: "Part of the long term initiative to establish and enhance road safety relates to the skilling of our drivers, particularly those who will be acquiring licenses for the first time. Our intended purpose is to work with the Department of Basic Education to include the driving lessons at high school as part of the curriculum."
