Makeover for Joburg's Main Reef interchange

Johannesburg - The M2 West Highway and Main Reef Road are set to receive a R30-million upgrade to ease congestion and improve access.

With the upgrade, the Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) intends to widen the road between Treu Road, Park Drive and Crownwood Road, transport MMC Nonhlanhla Makhuba said in a statement on Thursday.

The project would include a dedicated new lane from Church Street, up to the M1/M2, and traffic signal optimisation along particular routes.

Help economic growth

There were plans to improve storm water drains, road signs and markings, taking public transport, and other factors into account. The project was scheduled for completion by December 15.

It was hoped the construction would help contribute to the goal of 5% economic growth for the city by 2021.

JRA MD Sean Phillips, said in a statement that much research had been done to determine which roads were the highest contributors to congestion.

Phillips said: "A major contributing factor to congestion along Main Reef Road is the intense development between Production Road and Miriam Makeba Street."
