Public transport in Durban is set to receive upgrades worth R25-billion over the next 10 years, The Mercury reported on Tuesday, August14, 2012.
According to the newspaper, implementation of the Integrated Rapid Public Transport Network would be implemented in four phases.
TRANSPORT FOR EVERYONE
Expected from the upgrade are the widening and upgrading of roads, pedestrian walkways, creation of dedicated bus lanes and the upgrading of bicycle lanes and parking facilities.
Also part of the plan is the procurement of 800 extra articulated buses serving three high-volume corridors as well as a rail route from Bridge City to the CBD running through Rossburgh, Isipingo and Umlazi.
A bicycle-rent system, similar to those in London and Paris, would be made available from transfer stations. For commuters wanting to park their vehicles before boarding public transport, there will be a park-and-ride facility.
The Passenger Rail Agency will also benefit from this plan, receiving R1.5-billion worth of upgrades. They will focus on stations and signals along the route to ensure greater safety between rail and road transport.
