The Passat sedan and estate models are produced at Emden. Production of the secret new VW is due to kick off in 2008.

Although there is no official info yet about the newcomer, rumours have it that it will be a coupe version of the company's new Passat.

Insiders also said that the new car will compete in the luxury segment and that its project name is VW CC-Coupe.

The Emden's plant's management, the works council and the IG Metall labour union had agreed €80m in cost-cutting measures.

These measures includes more flexible working hours, abolition of breaks and the reduction of shift allowances, to make production of the new model.

There are 9 500 employees at the plant where about 200 000 Passats are built annually.
