I read with relief Charles' column regarding the ridiculous proposed law to reduce the Western Cape speed limits.
I drive on the roads every day as I'm a salesman and I agree that visible policing is what we need the most. Officials in official vehicles do not set good examples for the citizens and too many drivers seem to have followed the route of lawless taxi drivers by ignoring the rules of the road, most notably stop signs.
SPEEDING A MINOR PROBLEM
Doesn't it annoy you when you see people slow down but proceed without stopping or, even worse, not even slowing? I see it at least once every day.
Speeding is one of our minor problems in South Africa. Personally, I believe the single biggest problem on our roads is brazen, couldn't-give-a-damn lawlessness manifested by drivers using a cellphone whilst operating their vehicle, ignoring road signs (particularly stop signs), taxi drivers who do pretty much anything they feel like doing and drivers going through amber-turned-red lights to make that turn so they don't have to wait.
Drunk driving is a problem and sometimes results in deaths of innocent people (which elevates it to a serious problem). I believe that if we policed the "lesser" things better then even the drunk-driving problem would improve.
Where are the traffic cops during the day these days? They're not out on the roads, that's for sure...!
