Two wins for SA in VW R-Cup

NURBURGRING, Germany - Two South Africans are leading the international Volkswagen Scirocco R-Cup after the racing action in August 2013 at the Nurburgring in Germany.

Kelvin van der Linde’s dream run in the series continued when he took his fourth consecutive race from pole on August 18 2013, after dominating Friday’s practice and Saturday’s qualifying.

SA IN THE LEAD

Van der Linde, who raced on the same circuit his father Shaun did when he won an international BMW Junior Driver shoot-out 20 years, led throughout the race and increased his championship lead to 80 points over nearest challenger Michelle Gatting (Denmark), who retired after a collision.

With the top eight finishers starting Race 2 (August 17) in reverse order, Van der Linde was eighth on the grid with fellow South African Jordan Pepper on pole after finishing eighth in Race 1.

Although he was able to work his way up to fourth by lap five of the 14-lap race on a shortened 3.62km version of the GP circuit, Van der Linde found himself seventh by the end of the race after swopping places on each lap.

Pepper however was victorious.

The 2012 South African VW Cup champion retains a commanding lead in the championship on 228 points with three rounds remaining. Pepper moves up to second place on 168.

‘YOU CAN’T WIN THEM ALL’

Van der Linde said: “It was a tough race. There was some blocking and shoving and I made a mistake halfway through the race that cost me dearly. Much as I’d like to, you can’t win them all.

"From an overall race weekend point of view, I’m very happy. I scored the most points and still have a comfortable lead in the championship. Racing is all about winning and I look forward to the opportunity to add to my tally in the three that lie ahead.”

The next round two rounds of the 2013 Volkswagen Scirocco R-Cup will be held at Oschersleben in Germany from October 19 - 20.
