Toyota reveals fuel-cell sedan price

TOKYO, Japan - Toyota will sell its first fuel-cell powered vehicle (the FCV), Japan from March 2015 for the equivalent of R745 000, just less than analysts’ expectations of R1-million.

The sedans will also be sold in USA and Europe.

Toyota said: "Hydrogen is a particularly promising alternative fuel since it can be produced using a wide variety of primary energy sources, including solar and wind."

FUTURE GREEN VEHICLES

The automaker said it would start by selling the cars only in regions "where hydrogen re-fuelling infrastructure was being developed".

Prices forr the US and Europe markets have not been confirmed.

A Toyota executive vice-president, Karl Schlicht, said said hydrogen was easy to store, better at capturing renewable energy than batteries and could be produced anywhere: “Taking these facts into account reinforces how Toyota is convinced fuel cell technology can deliver our goal of zero emissions and sustainable transport."

The FCV sedan will pioneer its new technology. Its 700 Bar hydrogen tank holds 156 litres for a potential range of 830km.
