Toyota recalls 7.43 million cars

2012-10-10 10:23

TOKYO — Toyota will recalling 7.43 million vehicles in South Africa, US, Japan and Europe for a faulty electric window switch.

The recall, announced on Wednesday, October 10, 2012 affects more than a dozen models produced from 2005 through 2010. The electric window switch on the driver's side didn't have grease applied evenly during production, causing friction in the switch and sometimes smoke, according to Toyota.

NO CRASHES NOR INJURIES

No crashes or injuries have been reported related to the problem, but more than 200 problems were reported in US. Fewer problems were reported elsewhere, including 39 cases in Japan, Toyota spokesman Joichi Tachikawa said.

A spokesman for Toyota SA said no incidents had been reported in South Africa but the local company would be taking pre-emptive action. Cars involved are believed to be the RAV4, Corolla, Yaris, Camry and Auris from the indicated date range.

Owners in South Africa will be contacted when more information is available from Toyota Japan.

The recall announcement follows on news earlier in 2012 of an investigation into electric window switch fires that affected Toyota and GM products.

Recalled in North America are the Yaris, Corolla, Matrix, Camry, RAV4, Highlander, Tundra, Sequoia and Scion models xB and xD, spanning 2.47 million vehicles.

Some 460 000 vehicles are being recalled in Japan. The models are the Vitz and Belta (Yaris hatchback and sedan), Ractis, Ist, Auris and Corolla Lumion. The Yaris, Corolla, Auris, Camry and Rav-4 are being recalled in Europe, totaling 1.39 million vehicles.

The sprawling recall also applies to cars in Australia, China and elsewhere in Asia and the Middle East.

Toyota has been trying to fix its reputation after a series of massive recalls of 14 million vehicles over several years.

Before that, Toyota had boasted a reputation for pristine quality, centered around its super-lean production methods that empowered the worker to hone in on quality control.

Toyota executives have acknowledged the escalating recalls were partly caused by the company's overly ambitious growth goals.

      kenpeg.dawson - 2012-10-10 11:19

You want to buy a TOYota put up with it. There are real cars out there to be had.

      henk.vanrensburg.31 - 2012-10-11 12:15

Kenpeg. They are responsible to the owners of the cars. Most of the other manufacturers never admit to the problems in workmanship. I would rather support somebody who admits to the mistakes they make.

My question is how do you only realise the problem now after 7.43 millions units had been produced?

  • colin.ashby.35 - 2012-10-10 14:05

super lean methods to save money. so they saved a little bit on grease and cost a huge fortune on call back. i wont buy toyota, even their land cruisers , known for longevity are having problems at 30,000kms.

  • francoisengelbrecht1 - 2012-10-10 14:53

And the after sales service is CRAP! Won't ever buy a Toyota, overpriced for what you get, long time since anything they produced is value for money.

      henk.vanrensburg.31 - 2012-10-11 12:19

Which car is not overpriced in SA?

this is a total mess, what if people died from this sort of carelessness, isn't there a quality check of some sort before been released to public, if i had one i would sue toyota for putting my life in danger, and for traumatizing me, hell no.

Look on the bright side, at least Toyota is "Leading the Recall Way". My opinion they make horrible cars in all aspects of the word horror, will never buy one! If you dislike my comment then show your appretiation with a dislike! - Cheers

      henk.vanrensburg.31 - 2012-10-11 12:18

Better a recall than to sit with the problem as the consumer...

I suggest that all existing and potential Toyota owners read my website www.toyotasucks.co.za You will find information that may save you a lot of money and hassles in the future!

      henk.vanrensburg.31 - 2012-10-11 12:17

Good luck with that KIA! whahahahaha!

      sean.ohagan.777 - 2012-10-11 18:03

The major advantage of the Kia is a 5 year warranty and service plan. Toyota only offers 3 years or 100,000. If your Toyota vehicle needs a new engine after 78,000 but is 3 years 7 months old that's tough for you. In my case, even if it doesn't need it, it's still tough for you - Toyota will give you one for R72,000!

Toyota is such an overrated brand, styling sucks, Hilux overrated as useless off-road. I hope they see their arses!!!!!!
