COLOGNE, Germany – It was a web stampede half-a-century in the making. Potential customers flooded Ford websites to design, specify and price nearly 500 000 new Ford Mustangs in the first month the muscle car was available to order in Europe.
During the first week more Mustangs were specified online than any other Ford vehicle. The automaker reported: “Ford Mustang websites, enabling customers to customise their vehicle, attracted more than 1.1-million visits from mid-January to mid-February.”
The new Mustang will arrive in South Africa in December 2015.
V8 ‘STANG IN DEMAND
Ford reported a 50/50 split in orders for its muscle car equipped with a 231kW 2.3-litre EcoBoost or 307kW 5.0-litre V8 engine.
Ford Europe’s vice-president of marketing, sales and service, Roelant de Waard, said: “The rush to configure Mustang online represents 50 years of pent-up demand across Europe. For some people, the new Mustang is the car they have waited for their whole life.”

Confirming European tastes for sports cars with accessible performance, the most popular specification, at 37%, was the EcoBoost mated to a six-speed manual. A manual transmissions accounted for two-thirds of units.
Of the five largest European markets (UK, France, Germany, Italy and Spain) the powerful V8 was most popular in the UK (54%) and Germany (60%). The EcoBoost was most popular in Italy (61%), Spain (59%) and France (55%).
Top colours were red and black, each accounting for 20%. In its five biggest Euro markets, the most popular colours were:
UK – red (22%) and blue (17%)
France – red (24%) and black (19%)
Germany– black (21%) and red (18%)
Italy – black (27%) and red/blue (13%)
Spain – black (27%) and red (19%)
In China, where more than five-million people visited Ford sites, red was the leader, accounting for more than a third of orders. In the US, black was the top.
A black leather interior was selected by 61% of European customers and 28% of those also chose the optional custom pack, which adds:
• “Shaker Pro” premium audio with satnav
• 'Climate-controlled' seats, parking sensors
• Multi-spoked 19” alloy rims
• Chromed details on the fastback variant
The new Ford Mustang is available with a choice of 10 colours, equipped with 19” alloy rims, a performance brake package, auto xenon headlights, LEDs (front and rear) and a diffuser. It has dual- aircon, nine-speaker audio system and Ford Sync 2 voice control connectivity with a 20cm colour touch-screen.
The Mustang will be available to customers in more than 100 countries. First shipments will go to Asia, with vehicles arriving in Europe and in the UK, in right-hand drive, later in 2015.
Ford made its first 500 Mustangs for Europe available for reservation during the 2014 UEFA Champions League final. More than 9300 people registered online for a chance to reserve a car during the match; the first 500 were booked in 30 seconds.
