ELECTRIC HATCHBACK: Renault’s electric hatchback is taking shape and will sport the Nissan Leaf’s 60kW engine, though a hotter 100kW version is also on the cards.

Renault’s battery hatchback is taking shape - and our spy photographers caught the new Zoe undergoing testing.

Renault is planning the production version of an electric hot hatch based on the Zoe concept first shown at the 2010 Paris Motor Show.

The electric motor will be derived from sister brand Nissan’s Leaf and will most likely be capable of 60kW and 222Nm of torque. The new electric car will have a claimed range of 160km.

Officials at Renault's EV development programme state: “We have a higher-powered version of the car in mind for slightly later in its life cycle.”

Renault will roll out the hotter variant in late 2013 and promises there won't be much compromise in driving range on the higher output version.

The sportier version will be capable of 100kW and 271Nm.

The French automaker is on track to produce the performance-oriented battery car by as early as 2012.
