SPIED! Renault Twizy

SPOTTED: Renault's electric Twizy is spotted during testing.

Renault is going on the a green-friendly offensive with its development of electric vehicles. Our spy photographers spotted a near-production ready model of the electric Twizy. The City-car/scooter will be available in two versions; a 15kW motor and a 4kW. The 7kWh lithium-ion battery is under the front seat.

From our spy pics it looks more like a bizarre off-road variant of a Smart ForTwo with its boxy shape. As you can see the vehicle caters for a rear passenger, though it looks to be a tight squeeze.

The Twizy weighs 450kg (including batteries at 100kg) and has a claimed range of 100km (combined cycle). Its battery caters for easy charging courtesy of an extendable spiral cable stored beneath a flap at the front of the vehicle.

Thanks to an integrated charger, this cable is also compatible with roadside battery charging facilities and an adapter permits this cable to be plugged into any 220V 10A household electrical supply.

The battery fully charges in three-and-a-half hours.

The Twizy is set to be launched in Europe later in 2011.
