SPIED: Fiat 500X - the rugged baby car

Italian automaker Fiat has announced a five-year plan and says it is surging forward with the development of what could be its most important car since the 500 was launched.

It's called the 500X and combines the chic appearance of Fiat’s little city car with the height and space of its 500L, launched in SA in 2013.

The new 500X will likely make its debut at the 2014 Paris auto show. Wheels24's spy photographers captured images of the new crossover undergoing testing.

In terms of styling, despite its camouflage you can spot its 500 and 500L MPV roots. It appears to have gained more ground clearance, larger wheel arches and sports rugged black fender flares to protect the bodywork.

Like the Mini Countryman, the 500X is a very diluted version of the automaker’s core design. The rounded head and tail lights hint at the original Cinquecento.

Fiat’s has set itself a target 100 000 sales a year in North America though the 500X will certainly not be helped by Jeep's Renegade, built on the same architecture.
