HYBRID SUPERCAR: BMW's new i8 hybrid supercar will feature a turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine.

Our spy-photographers managed to bring us images of the vehicle that’s to become BMW’s plug-in hybrid i8 supercar.

The vehicle being tested in Sweden will be launched under the German carmaker’s new sub-brand “i” once it debuts.

Based on the Vision EfficientDynamics concept that starred at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show, the vehicle is said to pack 2+2 seating and a 0-100 km/h time in the 4.8 second range.

Rumour has it that BMW will forgo the frugal diesel engine of the concept model, in favour of a turbocharged four-cylinder petrol unit to work in coordination with a hybrid system.

Shrugging its diesel engine could mean the i8 will be gearing towards a petrol engine that would, subsequently, be more powerful.

The i8 hybrid is expected to retail for the rand equivalent of about R1.4m when this beast is finally launched.
