BMW has developed many crossover niche vehicles in recent years; in June 2010 we reported on the German automaker’s 6 Series Gran Coupe. Now it seems BMW has targeted its 1 Series as the basis for new crossover vehicle – The 1 Series GT.Our spy photographers spotted the new model undergoing testing and from our images it looks set to receive styling changes based on our spy images of the new 1 Series. The vehicle is much larger than shown in our pics and, though it sports 1 Series styling, the GT does not resemble anything within the BMW model line-up. In fact this hatchback/SUV crossover sports Audi A3-like proportions and influence from the Mercedes-Benz B-Class.MINI PLATFORM Though the five-door GT in our spy pics is heavily disguised, you can make out the greater ground clearance and sharp angular rear window. The new model will compete with the Mercedes B-class and Volkswagen Golf Plus. The 1 Series GT will also share its platform with the next generation Mini Cooper (2013). BMW chairman Norbert Reithofe said: "For these new vehicles (the new BMW and Mini) we are developing a common architecture for front and all-wheel drive." The 1 Series GT will be launched in 2013.
