SPIED! BMW 1 Series 2012

2011-01-17 08:26

SPOTTED: BMW could be introducing an estate version of its new 1 Series.

Our intrepid spy photographers managed to snap several new pictures of the 2012 BMW 1 Series undergoing testing in Europe.

The four-door hatch prototype, though camouflaged, gives us a glimpse of the prominent grille, sportier bumper design and production tail lights.

Overall, the new vehicle appears to be slightly longer and has a slimmer C pillar which should help to improve rearward visibility.
The next-generation model will be available in a number of configurations including two and four-door hatch, coupe and convertible.

According to BMW's product development chief, Klaus Draeger, the German automaker could be planning an elongated shooting-brake two-door estate/hatch variant. Such a model variant would create more space for rear passengers than the current generation and would enable BMW to offer its new 1 Series to the US market.

Draeger has also hinted at an xDrive (AWD) version but no official plans have been made.

The existing BMW and PSA Group alliance, which produces engines for the Mini, will continue developing engines for the 1 Series ranging from 1.4 to three litres.

We're likely to see the introduction of "greener" models in the form of low-emission diesel engines and a hybrid.

The 2012 1 Series will likely be unveiled later in 2011.
