SPOTTED: Our spies captured what will soon become a production ready version of the Audi R8 e-tron.

Audi’s electric R8 has been around for a few years - it's even tested its mettle at Le Mans. Now, however, well-heeled fans of the German automaker’s e-tron can expect to get their hands on this electric supercar.

Our spies captured what at first glance appears to be a standard R8, except for an opaque window for the engine bay, e-tron badging and lack of exhaust pipes. At the front you can see minimal air-inlets, presumably to reduce drag.

The Audi R8 e-tron is due towards the end of 2012 with the German automaker already pushing for a test fleet of 1000 cars and a provisional retail price set at 100 000 euros (R1-million - before SA taxes, should it ever reach the bottom end of Africa).

A standard R8 retails at R1.4-million for the coupe and R2.6m for the GT in South Africa.

Look out for the face-lifted R8 to revealed later in 2012.
