Sales spurt for 'broke' Suzuki US

DETROIT, Michigan - American Suzuki, distributor of Suzuki cars and motorcycles in the US, will import about 2500 more vehicles to meet demand - which is some going for a company that was looking at bankruptcy.

The Detroit News reports that the auto company's chief restructuring officer, Freddie Reiss, told dealers no more cars would be coming to the US then added: "We have one last chance - go get 'em!"

SALES UP 22%

Sales jumped. But American Suzuki still owes its parent about $152-million

The DetNews says American Suzuki's November 2012's auto sales rose by 22% to 2224. Sales also climbed in December, Reiss said, mainly because of generous incentives and a seven-year warranty. "Even with the spurt in sales though," he added, "the company still can't justify staying in the US."

The fall in sales has been catastrophic: they were, the DetNews said, at 120 000 a year until 2009; 2012 will tally only 22 000.

American Suzuki said it would  reorganise its motorcycle, boat and ATV operations; car warranties will be honoured and a parts supply maintained.

Wheels24 initially indicated that Suzuki Japan put the distributor into bankruptcy while it has been pointed out to us that on November 5 2012 American Suzuki Motor Company’s independent directors voted to file for bankruptcy.

Wheels24 regrets the misunderstanding.
