SPIED: Next Toyota Hilux

Toyota is testing what will become its eighth-generation Toyota Hilux. Spy photographers spotted the new bakkie being testing in Europe.

The prototype, disguised with garish cladding, reveals SA's most poular bakkie will receive a redesign complete with a smaller grille, new face and narrow LED's. Despite the camouflage one can also discern a sculpted bonnet.

The cabin appears to be larger and the prototype has less-pronounced wheel arches. The camouflage makes it hard to discern changes at the rear but the tail lights appear to be less wide than the current model.

Specifications remain a mystery but the new Hilux should be offered with a variety of petrol and diesel engines. It will no doubt be available in single- and double-cab variants as well as, as is the case with the current bakkie, two or all-wheel drive.

It could be a long time before the new Hilux arrives in South Africa - provisonally, it is expected only in 2016.
