SPIED: Next Smart ForTwo

Daimler-owned Smart is planning the release the next generation of its ForTwo city car range. A prototype of the new ForTwo was spotted undergoing testing. Spy images show the new ForTwo, which shares underpinnings with the next-generation Renault Twingo, in two-seater layout.

According to the automaker, the platform will also be used for a stretched version of the ForTwo – The ForTwo+2.

FOR TWO FOR FOUR

Up until now, the major limitation of the minuscule city car has been its inability to carry an extra passenger or two. That's set to change in 2014 as the Smart ForTwo+2 will have rear doors, making access to the tiny rear somewhat easier.

Both new Smarts will remain rear-wheel drive, keeping the engine below the floor.. The added length for the backseat in the four-seater will come from an extended wheelbase.

Although currently unnamed, it is rumoured to keep the Fortwo+2 moniker. It will be Smart's first four-seater since the failed Smart ForFour.

Rumour has it the cars will be available with several engine options, among them a hybrid and an electric.
