JOHANNESBURG, Gauteng - A 22-year-old man was arrested on the N12 in Alberton, near Johannesburg, after caught travelling at 234km/h on Sunday (March 22 2015).
Ekurhuleni chief superintendent, Wilfred Kgasago, said: "The driver claimed he was rushing his younger brother to a soccer practice."
He was driving a Volkswagen Scirocco.
'TESTING A NEW TOY'
Other drivers were arrested on the highway from the R59 and Voortrekker turnoff on Sunday.
A 25-year-old in a Ford was trapped at at 173km/h. He said he was rushing to help a friend who had been arrested for drunk driving.
Another driver, this time in a Mini Cooper, scored a speed-trap reading of 166km/h. Kgasago, said: " He claimed he was testing the power of his newly acquired toy."
Each of the drivers was released after paying R1500 bail are and expected to appear in the Palm Ridge Magistrate's Court in Alberton soon.
