Cape Town - The new vehicle market continues to see declines year-on-year in all segments, reports the National Association of Automobile Manufacturers of South Africa (NAAMSA).
The association reports a total industry sales figure of 48 745 new vehicles sold in October 2016 - a decline of 5494 vehicles or -10.1% compared to the 54 239 vehicles sold in the same month in 2015.
The consumer driven new passenger car market continued to experience pressure during October; 32 738 units reflected a decline of 3438 cars or a fall of -9.5% compared to the 36 176 new cars sold in 2015.

The Volkswagen Polo Vivo continued to dominate the new car sales chart with a whopping 2701 units finding new owners in SA. The bigger Polo (2458) was the only other car to have sold more than 2000 units.

The Toyota Corolla/Auris/Quest saw 1968 units being sold, followed closely by the Ford Fiesta on 1856.
The Nissan X-Trail (541) made a surprise appearance in tenth place though was outsold by the Toyota Fortuner (1172) and Ford EcoSport (1012), placed sixth and seventh, respectively.

Naamsa said: “Domestically, the short to medium term outlook remained extremely challenging. Double digit new vehicle price inflation, pressure on household disposable incomes, low levels of business confidence and relatively high interest rates would continue to impact negatively on new vehicle sales."
