Cape Town - Naamsa has revealed vehicle sales figures for December 2016 overall it was a very negative end to 2016.
Despite the drop in sales, the local sports car and supercar market showed positive results.
Prancing Mustang
These vehicles may sell in fewer numbers than passenger cars and bakkies but it's the price that sets this category apart with many retailing for more than a million Rand. The best-selling car in this category for December 2016 was the Ford Mustang, selling an astonishing 112 units!
Porsche placed second and third, with its 911 and Cayman/Boxster finding 47 and 43 new owners, respectively.
From here on out the numbers took a big tumble as the price per vehicle increases.

BMW sold two i8's and while Ferrari sold two cars locally - a 488 GTB and Spider.

Pressing times
The slowdown in the domestic economy, above average new vehicle inflationary pressures, increases in interest rates, pressure on consumers’ and household disposable income and low levels of consumer confidence had contributed to a decline in sales volumes.
Naamsa said: "Overall, 2016 turned out to be another extremely difficult year for the South African automotive industry with domestic new vehicle sales progressively under pressure, particularly at dealer level, despite attractive sales incentives.
"Industry trading conditions had remained intensely competitive characterized by pressure on dealer margins."
