Cape Town - Over the course of 2017, the Toyota Land Cruiser 200 amassed a total sales figure of 1243 units in the luxury SUV segment, an average of 104 units per month.

After a back-and-forth year with the Range Rover/Sport in which the two SUVs battled for sales supremacy, the Toyota cleared the Range Rover by 175 units at the end of December 2017.

The Range Rover/Sport, on its end, found 1068 new owners at an average of 89 units per month.

Luxury prevails

Behind the two leaders the Land Rover Discovery accumulated a sales figure of 904 units but this includes both the fourth and fifth generation of this very capable off-road vehicle. The fifth-generation was launched in South Africa in July 2017.

The Toyota Prado slots in at fourth place with a total figure of 881 units, ahead of the Jaguar F-Pace (682 units). Twenty units behind the F-Pace, on 662 units, sits the Jeep Grand Cherokee, ahead of the Range Rover Evoque (567 units).

Volvo’s Car of the Year champion, the XC90, found 378 new owners, a mere five units ahead of the Audi Q7 (373 units).

Completing the top ten, interestingly, is the all-new Range Rover Velar. The Velar was launched during the last quarter of 2017, but managed to make an impact from the get-go. And with 337 new units sold in the space of a few months, the Velar made its voice heard.
