The number of new vehicles sold in June increased by 3.3% to 53 562 models, reports the National Association of Automobile Manufacturers of SA (Naamsa).
Passenger car sales contributed 3.2% to the growth, while Light Commercial Vehicles grew 2.3%.
The new vehicle market ended the first half of 2013 in good shape, 6.8% ahead of the first six months of 2012 and in line with expectations and broad forecasts of 7%.
'DEFY MARKET INDICATORS'
The outlook for the remainder of 2013 is expected to feature a slightly softer outlook as drivers experience record high fuel prices and the exchange rate continues to slide, creating inevitable price hikes.
Azar Jammine, director and chief economist of Econometrix said: “First half sales have performed largely to expectation, but the next six months will display a much more consolidated picture of sales.
“The motor industry continues to defy other market indicators with exceptional growth. One of the biggest contributors to this growth has been driven by an emerging middle market that has contributed a large number of additional customers to the industry, effectively amplifying the size of the market.
