What was he thinking? Rider puts girl in danger

A video posted by YouTube user Rad Bonos shows a rider speeding in Edenvale, just outside Kempton Park in Gauteng, with a little girl clinging to his back. Shockingly the girl is wearing a bicycle helmet!

According to YouTube user Rad Bonos: “This idiot was revving his bike at the Grandslam Sports Bar in Edenvale and then left with a small girl clinging to his back. She was wearing a cheap bicycle helmet and he was riding like a lunatic. When I stopped next to him and took a photo I could see the little girl was terrified and it looked like she was crying.”

“He would race off like a bat out of hell and then slow down to a crawl and then race off again. I was surprised the poor child managed to cling on.”

In the video the rider can be seen riding through a red traffic light. The clip ends with photos showing the little girl clinging to the rider. It's not illegal for a child to be riding pillion on a bike, it's however a punishable offence to use a bicycle helmet instead of standard rider gear.

‘HE MUST BE ARRESTED’

ArriveAlive.co.za said: “This has caused outrage in the social media. We are also pleased to see that the minister of transport also expressed her shock at this incident and the need to act swiftly and strongly.”

National transport minister Dipuo Peters tweeted: “He must really be arrested. Putting the child through this life risking experience. Very irresponsible. He does not love his child. The department of social development needs to be roped in for him.”

‘DESERVES TO HAVE HER LIFE PROTECTED'

According to ArriveAlive.co.za, the rider was identified.

Edenvale Community Police Forum (ECPF)'s Linda McKenzie said: "We as the ECPF speak out in the strongest terms possible against this type of endangerment of our young children, the devastating consequences were not even considered when this man put that young girl on the back of his bike and drove the way he did."

Justice Project South Africa (JPSA) reports that the matter was reported to a senior Ekurhuleni Metro Police official and is being followed up by the EMPD.

A JPSA spokesperson said: “There are a number of serious charges that can and will be brought against this monster if witnesses come forward. This little girl deserves to have her life protected. Please let's do everything we can to make sure that it happens.”

“The suggestions of vigilantism that have been proposed by some, whilst admittedly coming from the "right place" emotionally are not helpful in this matter. Mob justice has no place in a civilsed society and as far as I am concerned, the biking community is one such civilised society.

“The owner of the number plate associated with this bike is extremely unlikely to have been the rider as he is 51-years-old. If I am not mistaken, this rider is a lot younger than that."
