#RecordRoadTrip: How far can an A6 travel?

  • Guinness World Record attempt
  • 4.2 litre/100km A6 2.0 TDI ultra
  • Reach at least 10 countries in Europe
  • Audi says A6 can cover over 1600km

LONDON, England – Audi will attempt a new economy-critical Guinness World Record with its frugal A6 2.0 TDI ultra – reach the most countries on a single tank of fuel.

On Tuesday (June 9), the efficiency flagship of the A6 range will set off on its ambitious Record Road Trip (#RecordRoadTrip), a project led by the UK's Royal Automobile Club (RAC).

Driving the diesel-powered A6 will be motoring journalist Andrew Frankel and racing driver Rebecca Jackson.

THE ROUTE

Since ferry or rail English Channel crossings would invalidate the attempt, the trip will start in Maastricht, Netherlands and continue through Belgium, Luxembourg, France, Switzerland, Lichtenstein, Austria, Germany and Italy towards the Balkans.

Audi said the route has been carefully planned to avoid the “economy-sapping effects of congested towns and cities, motorways and mountains”.

Frankel and Jackson will drive almost continuously using every technique at their disposal to use as little fuel as possible and maximize the all-important kilometres/litre figure.

Fuel consumption is rated at 4.2 litres/100km, tank capacity 73 litres and with emissions of 109g/km. Apart from special body wrap, the car will be identical to any other A6 Ultra.

South Africa will receive the 2.0 TDI-powered A6 towards the end of 2015.

‘AT LEAST TEN COUNTRIES’

Audi UK's head of public relations, Jon Zammett, said: “At a time when km/l is a priority we are using an A6 Ultra to set a world record, using real-world parameters. It’s truly astounding how efficient our executive car can be in normal use; our aim to cover more than 1600km across Europe on a single fill-up, costing as little as €123 (R1736)*.”

RAC Road Trip coordinator, Simon Williams, said: “We’re confident the combination of two skilled drivers, a highly fuel efficient Audi A6 ultra and a route that takes in the most possible countries in the least fuel-taxing way will lead to a hard-to-beat record that covers at least ten countries, perhaps more.”

REFRESHED A6 IN SA

Earlier in April 2015, Audi updated its local A6 range with new engines and transmissions to include three TFSI units and two TDI units.

At the launch in the Western Cape, only the new 1.8T FSI and the S6 was available. Later in June 2015, Audi will launch its 3.0 TDI 160kW S-tronic with the 2.0T FSI quattro S-tronic to follow in July. The 2.0 TDI unit will arrive towards the end of 2015.

* Based on Experian Catalist average diesel price of 120.65p/litre on May 20 2015, reports Audi UK.
