Warning: Explicit content. Wheels24 reader NAZLI CARIEM found a new appreciation for cars, especially Audis, after reading the popular erotic novel '50 Shades of Grey'.
About two years ago women in South Africa (including my mother) were going crazy over a certain erotic novel that took the world by storm... '50 Shades of Grey'.
Not only did this book drive us insane but the whole trilogy had us gawking, blushing, giggling and so very, very, very aroused... to put it mildly.
Maybe your mom, grandma, girlfriend or wife has read it and you were sitting there thinking, 'What the heck are they on about? What’s the big deal?'
If you’re a guy maybe the following will give you some perspective and if you’re a girl, READ THE BOOKS!
STAR OF THE BOOK?
Despite the dark, dangerous, irresistible male protagonist and his virginal protege, another not-so-much-talked-about character creeps in there - the Audis, specifically the Q7, A3 and the R8 Spyder....
The Q7 is used by the main characters as they are chauffeured to work and home by a military trained bodyguard. Strange that in my minds eye I imagine him as Phil Coulson from the Avengers, does anybody else imagine him like this or am I just weird?
Anastasia, the virginal damsel in distress when tied up (see what I did there, see, see?) is given an Audi A3 as a graduation gift by her dominant. This car is referred to as the “submissive special” and Christian Grey goes on to describe it as “one of the safest cars in its class”.
All his previous “naughty little girls” were given one whilst under his control… And he was gatvol of the 1970’s VW beetle she was driving. - Hi, I drive a VW Citi Golf, hint hint.
On a book tour interview the author EL James said: “I originally wanted to use the Audi A1 as the 'submissive special'. It’s such a neat little car but unfortunately it’s not available in the US… yet (at the time of the interview). So I had to plump for the Audi A3 – which is not quite as cute.”
ALL FLUSTERED
The Audi R8 has one of the best “scenes” in the book 50 Shades Freed. The following takes place on the passenger seat:
“He scoops me up under my knees, taking me by surprise; he lifts and swings me around to face the windshield.
“Place your legs on either side of mine,” he orders, putting his legs together in the middle of the foot well. I do as I’m told, placing my feet on the floor on either side of his. He runs his hands down my thighs, then back, pulling up my skirt.

So, if you see an Audi R8 Spyder on the road again, smile to yourself and think of all the possibilities that passenger seat holds.
