Rally crash: Driver dead too

EISENACH, Germany - German rally driver Janina Depping has died as a result of injuries sustained four days earlier in a crash in which her navigator was killed.

Depping and navigator Ina Schaarschmidt were rated as Germany's best female rally pair. Their Mitsubishi crashed into a tree and burst into flames in Saturday's Wartburg Rally; Schaarschmidt died at the scene, Depping was flown to hospital.

Depping, 34, had been active in the sport since 1996 and was considered an experienced driver. Schaarschmidt, 29, had been involved in the sport for four years.

EARLIER CRASHES

The rally was cancelled after the crash on a well-known section of the rally between Winterstein and Brotterode. This section gained notoriety during the 48th Wartburg rally in 2007 when Dirk Zipfel's BMW left the track and crashed into a tree, leaving navigator Mathias Rohlfs dead and Zipfel with serious injuries.

The rally also saw a fatal crash in 2000 when a car left the track and careered into a crowd of spectators.
