Quickest cat under the hammer

BROOKLANDS, England - One of the fastest Jaguars yet to come off the production line, the XJ220, is looking for a new home with a (very) rich owner.

The model series was introduced 21 years earlier (1992) and has become the "supercar" in Jaguar’s Hall of Fame after it toppled the XK120’s top speed of 193km/h. The XJ220 reached 343km/h as the company’s fastest road car - yet.

The car held the record for two years until the McLaren F1 managed to outshine it in 1994 and will be a stars at the Historics at Brooklands' classics and collectors' car auction on March 9 2013.

Only 281 were hand-built during its two-year production span. The two-seater, twin-turbo V6 made 404kW and sold for the equivalent of about R6.5-million even back then.

This all-orginal, jet-black, left-hand drive car was returned to England in 2013 by its original owner after 19 years in France having covered only 16 000km.

Don Law Racing in Staffordshire, central England, has spent the equivalent of nearly R350 000 to return it to pristine condition for auction. It is valued at the equivalent of about R1.65-million.

Auction director Edward Bridger-Stille said: "The XJ220 is a rare icon of Jaguar heritage and a worthy investment. One would be hard-pressed to find an alternative car at this price that would come close to the XJ220’s performance and 300km/h+ top speed.”

HISTORY INCLUDED

The car has a full history file, including the original release note from the Jaguar factory on collection day and a leather wallet containing handbooks and manuals.

Viewing of all consigned vehicles and automobilia, should you happen to be in the UK, will be at Brooklands on March 8 2013, the auction from 10.30am on March 9.
