LONDON, England - A night club-owning socialite friend of Britain’s princes William and Harry has been banned from driving for doing 208km/h on UK motorway.
Guy Pelly, 30, was camera-trapped by police on a dual carriageway limited to 112km/h in an Audi R10 supercar.
He failed to show up to answer the charge - he said he was ill so the magistrates in his absence banned him from driving for 56 days, fined him the equivalent of R10 000 and ordered him to pay R3650 costs.
NOT THAT FAST
Pelly’s lawyer admitted his client had been speeding but denied he was doing 208km/h. However the policeman who trapped him said there was nothing wrong with the speed gun.
Pelly, from Kensington, West London, was banned in 2007 for doing 145km/h on a similar motorway, but in a VW.
Nick Batty, spokesman for UK road safety charity Brake, said Pelly’s latest ban was too short: “Driving at 208km/h is incredibly dangerous and selfish and shows no concern for the law or for the safety of other road users."
Pelly, who lives in Kensington, London, has been friends with William and Harry since he met them while fox-hunting. He is said to have helped to organise William's stag party ahead of his marriage to Kate Middleton in April 2011.
SPEED FOOTNOTE: An Audi R8 V10 has a top speed of about 320km/h, thanks to a 5.2-litre engine capable of nearly 400kW. It can accelerate to 100km/h in about four seconds and to 160km/h in 8.7.
