Porsche Coty: More readers write

Seems our readers can't get enough of the Car of the Year controversy that's been running on our pages most of the week - was Porsche the right winner of the SA Guild of Motoring Journalists' competition?

We asked you, the readers, for opinions and they've come in fast... here's what happened:

The Porsche Boxster has been named 2013 South African Car of the Year, the first Porsche to win since the competition began in the 1980's to "reward automotive excellence and score highly in its own class, not against the other finalists".

Unfortunately for the German automaker, many readers not only believe the judges did a poor job but also question the Coty voting process.

FIRST PORSCHE TO WIN

Despite the Boxster being a phenomenal vehicle many readers believed it should not have won. A parallel Wheels24 Coty voting poll open to the public, eventually taking a phenomenal total of 19 431 votes, was won by the Ford Ranger.

Many readers believed that a sports car such as the Boxster was too "elitist", whereas the Toyota 86 was a sports car one could aspire to own and within reach of many drivers.

We’ve received a host of emails from our readers, most of them grumblings on why the Boxster - though admittedly a fine car - was a poor choice as the SA Coty. We've published a number of our reader's emails and collated them with this article (see links below).
