Petros: Gauteng hijackings down

2012-08-14 13:07

GOOD NEWS FOR GAUTENG DRIVERS: The Gauteng provincial police commissioner has reported a drop in hijackings in the province, promising further improvements.

Vehicle hijackings in Gauteng during 2012 have decreased from 25 to 16 a day, provincial police commissioner Mzwandile Petros said in Johannesburg on Monday. August 14, 2012.

Petros said: "That is a significant reduction and we do not plan to change our crime-fighting strategy in that regard, but improve on it."

FURTHER DECREASES EXPECTED

He was speaking after meeting national police commissioner Riah Phiyega, who was visiting provinces to learn about the police's strategies to fight crime.

At least 50% of the country's crime happened in Gauteng, Petros said, but added the number could come down further if police introduced "certain things".

"We will be producing our research project next month (September, 2012) that will detail how we plan to reduce that," Petros concluded.
