Palm tree crash no accident?

It's bad enough driving around Gauteng constantly worrying about bad drivers, irresponsible pedestrians and hijackers without having to deal with wayward flora.

A Toyota Fortuner driver in Ekurhuleni must have some choice words for the local council after a palm tree fell on his vehicle.

On September 11 2012 the Fortuner was on Kloof Road in Bedfordview when the palm tree (above) fell on to it. Fortunately the driver was not injured though the vehicle was damaged.

'FREAK ACCIDENT'

Terence Teixeira from the Matrix Road Safety Association arrived on the scene and reported that nobody else was injured in the "accident" and that the road was now closed.

Teixeira said: “It was a freak accident. The Ekurhuleni Metro Council employees were felling the dead palm and it is unclear as to exactly what happened.

"Ekurhuleni Metro Police are investigating.”

We're not sure how much investigating has to occur since it seems to be a clear-cut case of incompetence - the council workers cut down the tree without securing it or closing the road. The tree falls on to passing vehicle. Angry owner should sue the local council.
