The Opel Astra GTC is a hot wheels sizzler!

Overview
The Astra GTC Turbo has all the right credentials to become a desirable hot hatch - it has the looks and it has the engine - whereas its 5-door sibling is sometimes criticised for its "awkward styling", the GTC just looks sporty.
Despite featuring the same "design trend" as the 5-door model, the lines and general styling just work so much better on the GTC.
Its arched and sloping roofline gives the GTC a sleek profile and its sporty 18-inchers add to the racy look. One thing is sure, and that is that the GTC is a car that won't go unnoticed. Yes, this is a head twister deluxe!
Equipment and quality
Most people familiar with an Astra, old or new, will tell you that it is a car with a solid feeling. The GTC is no exception and the perceivable build quality is good. Fit and finish are top notch and this Opel doesn't have to shy away from cars such as the VW Golf.
Naturally it is well-equipped too and standard equipment includes the usual array of airbags, a CD front-loader, satellite audio controls and sports seats. Some optional extras are hill start-assist, heated front seats and xenon lights. You also have to pay extra for leather trim, which we feel could have been part of the standard specification.
Inside the cabin
Although the dashboard layout is functional and simple it is bland. There are no hints of the car's sporty exterior design as the fascia architecture is similar to that of other Astra models. But in general the car feels comfortable and front passengers have more than enough room. This coupe even offers acceptable room for rear passengers.
Under the skin
The top GTC model which we tested comes with sport suspension and Opel's SAFETEC system with IDS (Interactive Driving System) chassis. Components of SAFETEC include ESP, Traction Control and ABS with cornering brake control. The GTC Turbo's 2-litre engine thrusts out 147 kW at 5 400 r/min and torque is 262 Nm at 1 950 r/min.
Driving it
The GTC Turbo feels and acts like a sports hatchback offering awesome driving fun. Its lower and stiffer suspension gives it a sportier edge than the 5-door versions. Although its turbo engine might come across as a bit rough when you start the car, it becomes silky smooth at higher speeds.
It accelerates with ease and the speedometer needle climbs to higher speeds with ease. Not surprisingly the GTC is a swift mover and thanks to its racy appetite it gulps up twisty roads without hesitance. In general the GTC's road manners are great and it reacts rapidly to the driver's input. A special sport switch sharpens throttle and steering responses.
Conclusion
The GTC Turbo is a real "blitz" - excuse the pun. It has all the right attributes to be noticed in the crowded hot hatch playing field. This is arguably also one of the best looking Opel products to reach out shores - so far. There is little doubt with us that the Astra GTC will offer its buyers great fun. The GTC will definitely boost the Astra brand significantly - it is gripping stuff!
