NEW YORK, USA - Toyota will expand itspopular RAV4 range with a new hybrid unveiled at the 2015 New York auto show.
The all-wheel drive RAV4 Hybrid, the first in the range, is powered by a 2.5-litre petrol coupled with an electric motor.
The hybrid has a towing capacity of 1650kg and is fitted with Toyota’s trailer sway control system.To differentiate it from its RAV4 siblings, the hybrid has unique interior and exterior styling, badging and technology.
NEW RAV4 RANGE
The hybrid coincides with a host of new exterior and interior styling tweaks, new technology and safety features for the entire range.
While the hybrid will not join the South African line-up, several upgrades will be made to the existing local range by 2016.
The RAV4’s gains a new front design including LEDs for the first time. According to Toyota: "Along the sides, there is a new rocker panel that creates a more flowing look, and at the rear the combination lamps and bumper have been reworked, adding yet more emphasis to the car’s road stance."
The interior benefits from new dials, soft-touch materials, colour screen and a 360-degree view monitor.
It terms of safety, the RAV4 is equipped with Toyota's Safety Sense which includes pre-collision system, lane departure alert, auto high-beam and road sign assist. These features will also be included in the new Avensis and Auris. The RAV4 will further benefit from adaptive cruise control.
Its basic Pre-Collision System (PCS) has been enhanced. The PCS operates at an expanded speed from 10km/h to the SUV's top speed and can reduce speed, Toyota says, by approximately 40km/h. The system is also able to detect potential collisions with pedestrians, in the event of which automated braking operates at, "relative speeds of between 10km/h to 80km/h and can reduce vehicle speed by approximately 30km/h".
