LORENZO KICKS MARQUEZ OFF POLE: Was Marc Marquez just giving somebody else a chance to start the race - or was he really beaten to the 2014 San Marino pole?
ROME, Italy - Spaniard Jorge Lorenzo on Saturday (Sept 13) took Yamaha's first pole position of the 2014 MotoGP season for the San Marino GP while 2013 champion Marc Marquez had to settle for the second row.
Italian Andrea Iannone qualified second on a Ducati, just 0.051sec off the pace, with Lorenzo's team mate and nine-times champion Valentino Rossi completing the front row at Misano.
Spaniard Marquez, winner of 11 of the 12 races so far in 2014, will start fourth - his worst qualifying position of the season - with Honda team mate Dani Pedrosa fifth after the laps on a dry track.
Marquez has an 89-point lead over compatriot Pedrosa, his closest rival for the championship title.
Double MotoGP champion Lorenzo, whose most recent pole was at Japan's Motegi circuit in October 2013, has won for the past three years at Misano.
South African Brad Binder qualified 10th for the Moto3 race.
