Laser track: Ken Block vs SA racer

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa - When it comes to car stunts, there's one driver who is always up for any challenge - Ken Block.

The legendary stunt man performs some out-of-this-world vehicular stunts on a blackened-out race track in an epic video revealed at a launch event in Johannesburg. In the clip he is joined by South Africa’s Formula 1 hopeful Adrian Zaugg.

Zaugg is currently Lamborgini’s test driver in Switzerland. The video, posted to YouTube on May 27, has caused a global stir with over one million downloads within hours.

While the video was filmed in Germany, Castrol launched its new Edge boosted with Titanium oil at the Turbine Hall in Newton, Johannesburg on Wednesday (May 28), along with a special appearance by Zaugg.

The SA racer teamed-up with Block, Augusto Farfus (BMW Motorsport driver/DTM) and Mike Rockenfeller (Audi Sport driver/DTM) for a one-of-a-kind race against track lights, on a course pitched in darkness.

THE BLACKOUT TRIALS

Called the Blackout Trials, it features the world’s first pitch-black racetrack that pushed the drivers and their vehicles to the edge with its new product.

In the video, drivers were faced with a series of laser-light obstacles – the laser tunnel, laser drift, slalom and laser box – as they pushed their cars to the limit whilst racing against the lights.

To make things even more challenging, Block performed a synchronised jump over Rockenfeller’s Audi R8 V10 plus, especially difficult given the lack of a speedometer and RPM in his 2014 Ford Fiesta ST RX43, plus a wet track due to the rain.

Zaugg a former A1 GP driver for the SA team launched his career in Switzerland where he has raced in the Formula BMW, Formula Renault Cup, Renault World Series, GP2 and A1GP, scoring three wins for Team RSA.

'DIVING INTO DEEP WATER'

Zaugg said Blackout was unlike anything he had done before: “It’s definitely pushed my boundaries as a driver because everything I’ve faced so far in racing doesn’t come close to what this trial is all about. It’s like diving into deep water.”

Block said: “It was like being inside an actual video game. The course would keep appearing and then disappearing as I was driving and attempting to coordinate my segment with the other drivers. It definitely wasn’t an easy challenge.
